St Mary's Fabric Fund was formed in 1996 to help raise funds for the repair, restoration, preservation and improvement of the structure of St Mary's Church in Elsenham. We are completely independent of the Parochial Church Council (PCC), working alongside the parish and the Elsenham community for the good of the building.
A historic church is never truly finished. Stone weathers, timber ages, roofs and windows need attention. Our role is to make sure the money is there to do this work properly — so that one of Elsenham's oldest and most important buildings is passed on, sound and whole, to those who come after us.
A building worth saving
Much of St Mary's is of the 12th century, built on the site of an earlier — probably Saxon — church. With its Norman south doorway, fine chancel arch and 15th-century tower, it is a building of real architectural and historical value. You can read more about its history on The Church page.
How we help
Over the years the Fund has financed a wide range of essential works, from rebuilding the churchyard wall to repairing the tower roof and cleaning the east window. We raise the money largely through community events — and we'd be glad of your support.
